The CBDA exam is IIBA's online test for the Certification in Business Data Analytics: 75 multiple-choice, scenario-based questions in 2 hours, across six domains weighted from 9% to 20%. It costs $405 for non-members (first year of membership included) or $250 for members, has no work-experience requirement, and must be renewed every year with 20 Continuing Development Units (CDUs).
Last verified: October 2026 (IIBA CBDA page, fees page, and CBDA Certification Handbook dated May 2026).

Two facts surprise many candidates. First, the yearly renewal: the CBAP renews every three years, while the CBDA needs 20 CDUs every year. Second, the missing passing score. Prep providers often quote about 70%, but that number is an estimate, not an IIBA rule.
What the CBDA exam tests: six domains and weights
The CBDA exam tests the full analytics cycle, from framing a business question to shaping an organization's analytics strategy. IIBA publishes these weights:
| # | Domain | Weight | About how many of 75 questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Identify the Research Questions | 20% | 15 |
| 2 | Source Data | 15% | 11 |
| 3 | Analyze Data | 16% | 12 |
| 4 | Interpret and Report Results | 20% | 15 |
| 5 | Use Results to Influence Business Decision Making | 20% | 15 |
| 6 | Guide Organization-Level Strategy for Business Analytics | 9% | 7 |
Question counts are rounded estimates from the weights.
What each domain means in practice:
- Identify the Research Questions is about turning a vague business problem into a question data can answer. Our article on framing a business problem as a research question covers this domain in depth.
- Source Data covers data collection plans, data sources, sampling, and fitness for use. See sourcing and validating data.
- Analyze Data covers preparation, exploration, and modeling. You read and interpret statistical results; you do not calculate them by hand. Try the CBDA statistics questions to check your level.
- Interpret and Report Results is about matching the message and the visual to the audience.
- Use Results to Influence Business Decision Making is about turning findings into options, recommendations, and change.
- Guide Organization-Level Strategy covers operating models, data culture, and talent. It is small, but candidates who skip it lose easy points; the CBDA analytics strategy quiz is a quick check.
Three domains carry 60% of the score and two of them (4 and 5) are about communication and decisions, not math. This is the point of the certification: IIBA designed it for the analyst who connects business needs and data work.
How hard is the CBDA exam: what candidates say
The CBDA exam is moderately hard, and most of the difficulty comes from scenario judgment rather than technical content. Candidate reports and trainers point in the same direction.
- Harder than practice banks. In a 2021 Trustpilot review of a CBDA course, a candidate wrote that the practice questions felt "too easy compared to the actual exam" and asked for more scenario-based items. The author of our first-person CBDA certification story reports the same: about 20 of 75 questions flagged, and more statistical reasoning than expected.
- Medium, not extreme. An Adaptive US comparison from September 2026 rates the CBDA as medium difficulty with 100–120 preparation hours, against high difficulty and 120–150 hours for the CBAP.
- Background matters. The IIBA Sydney chapter, which ran a six-week CBDA study group in 2025, says strong core business analysis knowledge and a prior BABOK study group or core IIBA certification give a strong advantage.
- Developers can pass too. A 2024 Techcanvass candidate story describes a software developer who studied 2–3 hours a day and took two weeks of leave before the exam. He passed and was contacted by recruiters after he added the credential to his profile.
- Time pressure is real but manageable. At about 96 seconds per question, long scenarios eat time. Trainers recommend full timed mocks before the real exam.
A practical way to judge your own starting point: take IIBA's free sample questions. IIBA suggests that a score under 80% on that self-assessment means you should first read its introductory business data analytics paper.
Common reasons people fail the CBDA exam
Most CBDA failures come from preparing for the wrong kind of exam. The reasons below appear repeatedly in candidate and trainer reports.
- Memorizing definitions instead of applying them. A May 2025 guide from Managing Projects the Agile Way advises candidates to focus on applying analytics concepts rather than memorization, because the questions are scenarios.
- Practicing only on easy question banks. As the 2021 Trustpilot review shows, a bank that is easier than the exam gives false confidence.
- Skipping statistics interpretation. Many business analysts know Domain 3 least. You need to read p-values, correlation, and regression output and know which analysis fits which question.
- Answering for technical correctness, not business value. Several options often look technically valid. The best answer serves the stated business goal and follows the analytics process order: question, data, analysis, report, decision.
- No timed full-length practice. LN Mishra, a CBDA-certified trainer, recommends timed full-length tests and a review of every wrong answer to find weak areas (Adaptive US, October 2024).
- Ignoring Domain 6. At 9% it looks optional, but it is mostly vocabulary and judgment that can be learned in a few hours.
How to prepare for the CBDA exam
Good CBDA preparation takes four to six weeks for people who already work with data and two to three months for newcomers, according to the 2025 Managing Projects the Agile Way guide. Our 6-week CBDA study plan turns this into a week-by-week schedule.
A short version:
- Start with the official base. Read the Guide to Business Data Analytics and the CBDA Certification Handbook. The Guide is members-only, which is one reason the non-member exam fee includes a year of membership.
- Study by domain, in process order. Research questions, then data, analysis, reporting, decisions, and strategy.
- Use mind maps. Both the 2023 Medium post by Mufaddal Haidermota, who passed in December 2022, and the 2024 Techcanvass candidate story name mind maps as one of the most useful tools.
- Practice per domain, then mixed. Start with domain sets such as the 35 CBDA mock questions, then move to full timed exams.
- Book the exam when your mock scores are stable. Many trainers suggest scores above 70–75% on several full mocks before you sit the real one.
For timed practice with the official domain weights, you can use the CBDA practice exam simulator. certificate.tips is our product.
Is the CBDA certification worth it?
The CBDA is worth it if your work already sits between business questions and data, or if you want to move into that space; it is less useful as a first certificate for a general business analyst. The arguments on each side:
| For | Against |
|---|---|
| No experience requirement, so you can take it early | Lower market recognition than the CBAP, according to an Adaptive US comparison (2026) |
| Cheaper exam than the CBAP for members ($250 vs $350) | Yearly renewal with 20 CDUs and a fee |
| Focus on analytics questions, communication, and decisions | Not a technical credential: no coding, no tools |
| Recruiter interest reported by some holders (Techcanvass, 2024) | The Guide is members-only, so long-term access needs membership |
Adaptive US recommends earning a core IIBA certification (ECBA, CCBA, or CBAP) before a specialist one such as the CBDA. If you are choosing between IIBA credentials, our BABOK Guide overview explains what the core certifications build on.
After you pass, keep learning. As Mufaddal Haidermota put it, "Keep reading, keep learning because analytics is constantly evolving."
